1. Tulum, Mexico
Tulum is one of the most desired places of the Mexican Caribbean, covered by 10 kilometers of white sand with turquoise waters and Mayan ruins located on the edge of the Caribbean Sea with lagoons, cenotes and a Mayan archaeological zone on the shore.
It is the last city built by the Mayans, chosen because of its natural riches, now with remains of their temples and pyramids that make Tulum the perfect combination between the modern world and prehispanic marbles.
Despite its populated places full of resorts, hotels, restaurantes and commerce, its mayan spirit and natural energy remains, leaving a place like no other in the Mayan Riviera.
2. Culture
The ancient city of Tulum is called “Zamá”, which in Mayan means “morning” or “dawn”. The name of Tulum is translated as “wall”, alluding to the wall that was built by this civilization and is preserved to this day.
One of the main ruins is called El Castillo (the castle) where there lies a temple with three entrances decorated with serpentine columns and two giant masks that cover the corners.
This is one of the biggest and best preserved ruins of the entire Mayan culture, dating back to the VI century.
Another temple that remains just north of El Castillo is the Temple of the Descending God, a smaller building with images of their deities.
One of the most important remains is the Temple of the Frescoes, with mural paintings covering its walls that portray a series of supernatural beings and other myths believed by this civilization, which are now regarded as of the most important testimonies of pre-Hispanic Mayan mural paintings, and a cultural staple of the region.
Aside from the ruins, there’s other natural places that are full of history like the Laguna de Kaan Luum, where a cenote is hidden. This place is known for its mud baths, where one can dip into and receive its healing properties, as believed by the local community.
3. Expats in Mexico
Thanks to its incredibly visited status, Tulum has evolved into a place that often has more international visitors than local citizens in the area. You’ll be able to find stores and restaurants with English speaking workers, as well as a growing community of other international people that have relocated to this tropical paradise.
This community offers its own activities, with groups on Facebook or whatsapp dedicated to finding other expats looking to engage in the same activities, or forming a group of friends to discover the town’s best hidden spots together.
The great benefit of Tulum is that it offers a variety of activities that can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of their age or ideal lifestyle.
For retirees, some of the most enjoyable activities include: cycling, doing yoga, swimming, dining out and relaxing on the beach.
4. Before you move: things to consider
To move here full-time, you’ll need a Mexico Residence Visa, which you can get before even entering the country at your local Mexican Consulate. If you are looking for a retirement visa, it is an easier process which will allow you to move swiftly to the city.
While Tulum is considered one of the most expensive places to live in Mexico, the cost of living is still relatively cheaper compared to the US, Canada and other European countries. So, while you would probably save even more money going to a different city, it’s well worth the unique experience that only a life in Tulum can give you.
Speaking of money,
There are several banks available, including BBVA Bancomer, HSBC, and Scotia Bank, where you can retrieve both pesos and dollars.
There’s also a large variety of places that accept e-payment like Apple Pay, so you can stop worrying about carrying a wallet everywhere.
Though it needs to be said: Tulum thrives off of its laid back lifestyle and one-on-one treatment, so if you’re going to a place run by locals, it’s more than likely that they won’t accept debit or credit cards, so carry cash with you when going out to explore, save the cards for restaurant outings or nights at the club.
While it’s usually regarded as a place with a desire to return to the past and preserve a laid back lifestyle, Tulum still offers a variety of supermarkets, malls and other businesses that will make your move pleasant. You can still order from amazon while drinking a cocktail at the beach.
When it comes to arriving at Tulum, you’ll go through The international airport in Cancun, with a direct road that leads to Tulum in just a couple of hours worth of travel.
5. What to do in Tulum?
Tulum has some of the richest cultures in the world, combined with beautiful protected ecosystems that are untouched by mankind.
